Sermon Discussion Guide
1 Peter | Part 5 | Vocation and the Way of Jesus| 1 Peter 2:18-25

Gathering Prayer.
Father, by Your Spirit, would you guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Gathering Question.
What comes to mind when you hear the word "calling"? How has your understanding of "calling" changed over time?

Opening Questions
  • What stood out to you in the sermon?
  • What insights did you gain?
  • What questions did it raise?

Read 1 Peter 2:11-12, 18-25

Submission and Suffering
  • Peter uses the word "submit" several times in this section of the letter. What do you think submission looks like in the life of a follower of Jesus?
  • While we may not live as slaves, what are situations in today’s world where Christians are called to live in submission or endure unjust treatment? How do you see this playing out in workplaces, governments, or other authority structures?
  • Peter reminds us that Jesus did not retaliate when He suffered unjustly, but entrusted Himself to God. How does this example challenge you in your own life?

Matthew 16:21-28
  • A "cruciform" life is shaped by the cross. What do you think it means to live a life shaped by the death and resurrection of Jesus?
  • Jesus teaches that following Him means denying ourselves. How can we better align ourselves with this calling in a world that values self-fulfillment?

Vocation
  • Our modern understanding of “vocation” has become focused on careers. But, biblically, vocation means much more. How does it impact your perspective to know that God calls you in every aspect of your life, not just your job or career?
  • Think about the different roles you play (e.g., parent, student, worker, caregiver). How does recognizing these as "callings" change the way you approach these roles?

Putting into Practice
  • What is your experience with spiritual disciplines of “sacrifice”, like fasting, Sabbath, and tithing?  How do these practices help form us into Christlike people?
  • Are there spiritual disciplines that you find particularly difficult? How might these disciplines help you grow in submission and in living for God’s purposes?
