Opening Questions
- What stood out to you in the sermon?
- What insights did you gain?
- What questions did it raise?
Psalm 139:1-6
- What does it mean to you for God to “know” you and “search” you?
- God is omniscient (all-knowing). Do you find this truth comforting or challenging (or both)? Why?
The LORD
- Read Exodus 3:1-14. What does the name of God revealed to Moses teach us about the character of God?
- Augustine wrote, “God is closer to me than I am to myself.” What is your reaction to this quote? What are some implications of God’s closeness to us?
- How should God’s closeness impact our daily lives?
The God Who Sees Me
- Read Genesis 16:1-13
- Reflect on Hagar’s experience in life. How would you describe her mental state? What would you have done if you were Hagar?
- Can you share a time when you have felt like Hagar: alone, carrying the weight of your life and not sure what to do?
- What does God’s intervention show us about his character and concern for us?
Put it in Practice
- Is there a weight that you are carrying that might be lifted because God sees you?
- As you close as a group, take a couple of minutes to sit in silence, focus on your breath and consider how the name of God passes your lips with each breath you take. After this exercise, share what you experienced.
