Father, by Your Spirit, would you guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Psalm 139:7-12
  • What stands out to you in these verses? 
  • How would you restate these verses in your own words?

The bad news of God’s omnipresence: Where can I flee from your presence?
  • Read Jonah 1:1-3. Why did Jonah try to run from God?
  • How do you see people trying to flee from God’s presence in today’s world?
  • Modern Western culture believes that we should be free to live as we please and to do whatever makes us happy (personal autonomy). What are some practical ways where you might see this belief conflicting with God’s claim on our life expressed in his omnipresence?
  • Can you think of any “Jonah” areas in your life, either in the past or the present, where you have resisted God’s claim? What do you think are some common areas in modern life?

The good news of God’s omnipresence: Your right hand will hold me fast.
  • God’s claim on us means that he never leaves us or forsakes us. He is always ready to rescue. How have you experienced the good news of God’s omnipresence?
  • Read Psalm 22:1-2 and Matthew 27:45-46. 
  • Why did Jesus have to experience the absence of God? What does this mean for us?
  • How does Jesus’s sacrifice ensure that we never have to experience separation from God?

Put it in Practice
  • Are there areas in your life where you are resisting God’s presence? How can you surrender those areas to Him?
  • Who in your life is trying to flee from God? Take a moment to pray for them, asking that they would awaken to the inescapable reality of God’s presence.
  • How can embracing God’s omnipresence bring you peace and assurance this week?
