Sermon Discussion Guide
PSALM 139 | Part 3 | The Power of God | Psalm 139:13-16

Gathering Prayer
Father, by Your Spirit, would you guide us into all truth. Help us to hear and be attentive to Your voice as we work through this study. In the name of Jesus, Your Son, we pray, Amen.

Opening Questions
  • What stood out to you in the sermon?
  • What insights did you gain?
  • What questions did it raise?

Read Psalm 139:13-16

The Omnipotent God of Creation
  • What is something in creation (nature, science, the human body, etc.) that amazes you and makes you stand in awe of God’s power?
  • Reflect on God creating all things ex nihilo (out of nothing). How would this shape how we view God’s power in our lives?

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
  • What does it mean to you to be “fearfully and wonderfully made”?
  • How does this passage challenge the way we view ourselves and others?
  • God values life from the womb. How does that shape our understanding of human dignity?
  • How does knowing that our lives belong to God change the way we live?
  • Reflect on Augustine’s writing in Confessions: “You are great, Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is your power, and infinite is your wisdom. And man desires to praise you, for he is a part of your creation; he bears his mortality about with him and carries the evidence of his sin and the proof that you resist the proud. Still, he desires to praise you, this man who is only a small part of your creation. You have prompted him, that he should delight to praise you, for you have made us for yourself, and restless is our heart until it comes to rest in you.” What does Augustine teach us about our purpose in life?

Romans 1:20-22
  • Romans 1 warns against finding our identity and meaning in creation rather than in the Creator. How do you see this happening in the world today?
  • What are some “trust structures” you’ve built in your life? (Things you rely on instead of God for security, identity, or happiness.)

John 3:1-8
  • Reflect on the New Testament’s emphasis on new birth and new creation. What does this emphasis teach us about the power of God to change our lives?

Put it in Practice
  • What is one truth from Psalm 139 that I need to hold onto this week?
  • What is one thing I need to surrender to God to fully embrace my identity in Him?

Closing Prayer
  • Pray together through Psalm 139:7-12.
