The Roots of Christmas

The Old Testament concludes with these words:
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

After these strong words of both hope and judgment, we are met with 400 years of silence. During this period, there are wars and destruction… and hope as the people wait for the Messiah.
As we turn the page to the New Testament, we read of the hope found in the long-awaited Messiah.

Hold on… that can’t be right.

Have you ever read the genealogy? Most of us probably haven’t. Generally, we skip over this to get to the story of Mary and Joseph.
This Advent, we will spend our time with the genealogy, the family tree of Jesus. Because it turns out that Jesus didn’t come from nowhere; he came from a people, a family. His family history is fascinating. Matthew lifts up some specific people that should grab our attention. Throughout Advent, we’re going to look at some of the shocking family history of Jesus:
As we examine this shocking family history, we will once again see how the good news of Jesus Christ is for absolutely everyone.
